Photography + Photoshop = Loads of Fun

Although I have always considered myself a photographer, I have also had a yearning to be a painter. But admittedly, there is a teeny tiny obstacle that prevents me from pursuing this form of creativity, and that is my inability to draw. But then a beautiful thing happened! I purchased a digital camera and discovered a computer software program called Photoshop.

My artwork begins with a digital image, perhaps of flowers taken from a walk through the garden, or maybe shots of scenery, old barns, or the shoreline of Georgian Bay from a recent excursion. Once the images are downloaded to my computer, this is where the real fun begins. Looking through an assortment of images I choose ones that appeal to me, then using Photoshop I apply different textures or colours for results that range from subtle to very extreme. An otherwise plain photograph can be totally transformed to look like a watercolour painting, a drawing, a lithograph, a graphic silk screened image, or whatever I desire. This process gives me the opportunity to apply my own style and really express my own interpretation of the subject matter more than a simple photograph could capture.

I have always known that I really like to take photographs. But what I have come to realize over the years, when I think back to the creative days in the darkroom - what I truly love - is to take a photograph, manipulate it, and make a very unique, expressive and creative image. Seems like I am finally painting - but with photographs!

P.S.  As a co-founder of The Bay Photography Club with Bruce, it is wonderful to see how this photo club has grown.  Congratulations to everyone for its continued success!
